Psyllium Powder, Husks, Granuals

Psyllium husk is a natural fiber used to treat constipation and cleanse the bowels of unwanted buildup and toxins. Psyllium is found in health food stores as either a powder or a natural supplement. The fiber can improve digestion and increase the feeling of fullness that allows you to eat less during weight-loss efforts.

Fiber from any source is ideal, but psyllium has much more fiber per serving compared with other sources. While 100 grams of psyllium offer 71 grams of soluble fiber, other fiber options such as oat bran only have five per 100-gram serving. Fiber is an essential part of weight loss because it helps keep you full, according to Jennifer Brett, ND, at the Wilton Naturopathic Center in Stratford, Conn. Keeping hunger pains away by using psyllium fiber may help you avoid cravings and lose weight.

Initially, using psyllium for weight loss helps you drop one to three pounds of waste buildup from the intestines. But using it as part of a healthy diet and exercise plan will help you lose weight gradually over time.

How Much Should You Take?
Take one teaspoon of psyllium powder and mix it with eight ounces of warm water. Drink quickly, because the fiber will begin to expand when it is mixed with water. After the initial glass, drink a second eight-ounce glass of water to hydrate the intestines so the fiber moves through them more easily. Because the fiber content is so high, it will absorb most of the moisture in the intestines, pushing out waste and toxins from the body.

Start out with one teaspoon per eight-ounce glass of water for one week and then move up to two teaspoons per cup to cleanse the bowels and provide fullness to the stomach. For weight-loss purposes, take the serving of psyllium each day at least 30 minutes before eating, to prevent overeating.
